Bios of Guests:
Terri Johnson: A local Greensboro, NC activist and member the NAACP, Terri
graduated cum laude from Ben L. Smith High School in January 2006. To get
money for college, she enlisted in the military only to find that her
recruiter had lied to her about deployment overseas and many other facets of
military life. Terry went AWOL and after contacting Steve Woolford of
Quaker House, GI Rights Hotline, obtained a discharge from the military.
She is a great speaker. This year she will be working with NC Choices for
Youth and the AFSC to inform youth, teachers and other counselors about
non-military opportunities for service, training, and education and to speak
truth about the perils of military recruiting.
Eugene Cherry, Army Specialist, age 25, served as a medic with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team 10th Mountain Division. In 2004, his brigade was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While in Baghdad, Eugene worked as a medic doing combat patrols as well as working in a clinic. While in Iraq, he developed signs of post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). In June, 2005, he sought help from his superiors. Eventually, He went AWOL for 16 months. The military sought to demote, dishonorably discharge and imprison Eugene as he attempted to salvage his mental health. But in July, 2007 he was honorably discharged without court-martial.
