The News and Public Affairs Department of WSLR – LPFM 96.5, Sarasota’s
Community Radio Station, is pleased to broadcast a special report on
Thursday, October 23, 2008 from 5 to 6 p.m. on “Community Opposition to
Major League Baseball Spring Training Stadium Subsidies.” There will be a
live on air interview of Dr. Philip Porter, Professor of Economics at the
University of South Florida and a nationally recognized expert on the
economic effects of sports stadium subsidies. He is also the Director of
Center for Economic Policy Analysis. Dr. Porter is an award winning author,
teacher and researcher. He has both a B.S. and an M.S. degree in Economics
from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Texas A & M University.
He has testified in court cases on public subsidies of stadiums. He recently
testified in the Florida Marlins stadium lawsuit in Miami.

In addition, Cathy Antunes, the leader and founder of Citizens for
Responsible Government, a local ad hoc citizens’ group investigating the
economic costs and possible benefits of proposed local public subsidies of
spring training stadiums will be in the studio to talk about this group and
local citizen investigation and opposition to the various proposed subsidies
to private corporations.

I’ll also be providing some background information on the Tourist
Development Tax, its background, how it works and possible alternative uses
of the funds from this program. Prerecorded interviews with some local
government officials
may also be broadcast.
