Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius this week released a new report, Hard Times in the Heartland: Health Care in Rural America, outlining the health care challenges facing rural communities. Nearly 50 million people in rural America face challenges accessing health care.  Not only do these Americans face higher rates of poverty, they report more health problems, are more likely to be uninsured, and have less access to a primary health care providers than do Americans living in urban areas. This state of affairs makes it urgent to reform health care as fast as possible.

CATHERINE DUNHAM, Ed.D .is the President of the Access Project, a research and advocacy organization that has worked to improve access to health care for people without adequate health insurance since 1998.  She served as national program director of the Community Health Leadership Program supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1991-2007.  From 1984-1991 she was the chief health and human services policy advisor to Gov.
