WSLR Seeking VISTA Candidate

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.

VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization. During your service, you’ll receive a modest living allowance ($865/month), health care, and other benefits. And, upon completing your service, you can choose to receive either an education award worth $4,725 to pay for college, or $1,200 in cash. You are not allowed to have another job or go to school during your year of service. This position will start in September 2009.

WSLR’s VISTA Candidate will work to expand the station’s outreach into low-income communities and work to engage more citizens from low-income communities in the workings of the station.

Candidates should possess:

* Excellent written and verbal communications skills
* Familiarity with word processing, database programs and the internet
* Strong organizational skills and methods
* Community organizing experience a plus
* Interest in/understanding of issues of independent media, media reform,and social and economic justice
* Strong interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative, as well as be a part of a team
