Small ChangeOn Friday, Jan. 29, Surreal News hosts Steve and Larry welcomed Michael Edwards (author of “Small Change”) and Mary Boyle (Communications for Common Cause) to their show.

Michael Edwards (author of “Small Change”) shared his thoughts on non-profit organizations operating like private enterprises. Dubbed “philanthrocapitalism, its  supporters believe business principles can, and should, be the primary drivers of social transformation. Edwards thinks the business-minded model damages a civil society and he feels it’s time to “re-assert the independence of global citizen action.”

Boyle is Vice President for Communications of Common Cause, a nonpartisan, nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen public participation and faith in institutions of self-government (www.commoncause.org). She discussed the recent Supreme Court decision on unlimited corporate spending on political campaigns. Boyle’s fields of expertise include campaign finance reform, governmental integrity, governmental accountability, voter confidence and election preparedness. She covered politics and public policy for The Gazette of Colorado Springs and worked as a general assignment reporter for The Associated Press.

Each episode of The Surreal News features “A Tannen Weekly” by humorist Pete Tannen, a Media Matters Minute and plenty of under reported news items.
