Join the Sarasota Blues Festival and WSLR for a Bluesfest kick off party in anticipation of the 20th annual Sarasota Blues Festival taking Saturday November 6.

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. “Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations. When The Lee Boys bring their joyous spiritual sound to the stage, audiences instantly recognize that this is not “sitting and listening” music: dancing, shouting out, and having fun are considered essential parts of their tradition.

Highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Ben Prestage will open the show.

Join WSLR in celebrating the life and music of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, Sunday, August 1 at Sun N Fun RV Resort, located at 7125 Fruitville Road, just east of the I-75 overpass.

This family friendly event features local bands covering the music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, food and beverage vendors, kids activities and a raffle with prizes including an Epiphone Guitar and case donated by the Sarasota Guitar Company. Raffle prizes also include Grateful Dead CD’s, Black Diamond guitar strings, a Black Diamond hat and many other great prizes (see the entire raffle prize list below).

Tickets for Very Merry Jerry Day are $10 and can be purchased at the door the day of the event or in advance at the WSLR Events Page or by calling the WSLR business office at 941-894-6469 during daytime business hours.

On Thursday July 29, Rick Hughes and Nikki Heil from the Rotary Club of Sarasota dropped by to discuss the multi-faceted efforts of the local Rotary Club, with Rick serving as the clubs’ new president.

Topics of discussion included the Group Study Exchange, Rotary Youth Exchange, the Oak Park School playground, Rick’s involvement with the homeless community.

Nikki shared her recent experiences in Russia, where she traveled with other Rotarians to get a sense of the business and social practices taking place in Siberia.

Nikki’s daughter Zoe shared her thoughts on the pending arrival of an exchange student from Bangkok, who will be living with the Heil’s during part of her school year long stay in Sarasota.

On Thursday July 15, City Commissioner Terry Turner dropped by the WSLR studio to discuss the 2010-2011 City of Sarasota budget being finalized by city commissioners and city staff — with a Town Hall meeting taking place at City Hall on Wednesday July 21 at 6 PM…a meeting that will be open to the public.

Commissioner Turner also shared his thoughts on the city mooring field, the Police Advisory Panel, red light cameras, redeveloping Newtown, Amendment 4 and other local matters.

This week on Gray Matters, we revisit my very first show ‘Housing Matters” but with a twist. “Housing Matters” was a show about how finances affect the choices of housing for seniors. We talked with a Realtor about the many choices for those with financial security, then with the administrator of a government-assisted housing campus in Sarasota, then with a person with no home at all. We hear the light side of real estate from Renee Fisher, then. In “Housing Matters Redux,” we also talk with my friend Joanne Keir about what makes a house a home.

U.S. – Cuban relations, frozen in time for five decades, are beginning to show some signs of returning to life.
In Havana, a government determined to tackle Cuba’s fundamental economic dysfunctions is talking to the Church, freeing political prisoners, and apparently searching for new ways to coexist with public dissidence. Meanwhile in Washington, there’s some movement, too. A bill that would lift the travel ban is the closest any substantial embargo-easing bill has ever come in Congress to pass. A behind-the-scenes battle is underway in the House of Representatives, and we will fill you in on that fight, and what’s going on in Cuba.
A usual, Florida-Caribe will also give you the latest from our little-known neighborhood. Elections in Mexico, a terrorist in Caracas, a drug lord in Kingston, the one-year performance check on El Salvador’s first leftist president in half a century, the soccer World Cup — you name it.

On Thursday July 8, Newtown residents and community activists Valerie Buchand and Barbara Langston dropped by to share their thoughts on potential parking issues at the Janie’s Garden public housing/mixed-use housing complex on Central Avenue, in the Newtown community. This show also featured a pre-recorded interview with Sarasota Housing Authority Executive Director Bill Russell.

This show was a follow up to Valerie and Barbara’s appearance the previous weekend on WSLR’s “Newtown & Beyond” show.

Late nights rock on WSLR!

If you like hard rock, punk rock and heavy metal, by all means check out the late night programming on WSLR on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Preceded by Mark Binder’s Yesterday’s Dead Today at 7 p.m. and Mike Finly’s We Need More Jazz, the Monday evening musical fare kicks it up a couple notches at 11 p.m. with two new additions to the WSLR rotation.

At 11 pm tonight (Monday, July 26), tune in for The Harvey Smith Punk Show hosted by Dave O’ Sullivan. The Harvey Smith Punk Show highlights the music of old school punk bands like the Sex Pistols, The Dead Kennedys, The Misfits, The Ramones and more punk favorites and rarities.

Tune in next Monday (August 2) at 11 p.m. for The Rock Show hosted by Late Night Frank and returning after a successful July 19 debut. The Rock Show features deep cuts by rock, hard rock and heavy metal bands from the 80s and 90s and beyond, with a good dose of local rock included with each week’s show.

The Harvey Smith Punk Show and The Rock Show alternate on Monday evenings, so either way, WSLR rocks late at night on Monday nights.

And the fun doesn’t stop there…Every Tuesday morning at 1 a.m. The Nightmare Room follows the Harvey Smith Punk Show or The Rock Show with two hours of blistering heavy metal music, metal news and a smattering of comedic relief hosted by Lord Riot, with Princess Pain and friends contributing to the metal mayhem.

The metal madness continues every Wednesday evening at 11 p.m. with Metal Medicine – WSLR’s pioneer heavy metal show, featuring metal music, commentary and metal music reviews by Devin & Kyle.

Antsy McClain may be best known as a humorist, but he has been raising the eyebrows of fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. His poignant,observational writing style has received the praise of Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Lindsay Buckingham, David Wilcox and countless others.
His music & show are a combination of hilarious stories and sociological observations about the trailer culture where he grew up in Kentucky.
Antsy performs solo and with a variety of musicians known affectionately as the Trailer Park Troubadors.
