The following is a Radio Editorial from the Board of Directors of WSLR:

In light of rapidly-escalating US government rhetoric directed against
Iran, and massive U.S. military moves in the Persion Gulf, the Middle
East, and in Southwest Asia, the WSLR Board of Directors is endorsing
the February 4th International Day of Action to Stop The US War
Against Iran.

A diverse coalition has endorsed the Day of Action.

All agree on the need to stop the U.S. and/or Israel from launching a
military attack on Iran.

The new sanctions President Barack Obama signed into law on Dec. 31 –
with the goal of breaking the Iranian central bank — were themselves
an act of war aimed at the Iranian people.

There is a great danger of a wider war, should fighting break out in
or around Iran.

Nuclear powers Russia and China have each warned of serious regional
and global repercussions from an escalating US/Iranian conflict.

We urge Sarasotans of all political stripes to mobilize immediately,
to support the February 4th International Day of Action to Stop The US
War Against Iran.

Street demonstrations are in order.

Each of us needs to communicate with our congressional delegation, to
let our representatives know that, whatever problems we may have with
Iran, war is not the answer.

And if our congress truly wants war with Iran, then our Constitution
requires a formal Declaration of War.

It is past time for the American citizenry to wake up and declare: Iran will not be an Iraq Redux!

This week on Cafe Oasis, we welcome ultra-marathon runner and “superman” John Pyle into the studio.  John is currently training (40 miles per day) for his transcontinental run from San Francisco to Key West which will start on March 1st.  He will be making his run across the country with an American flag, in support of the Wounded Warrior Project, in his quest to raise 1 million dollars in support of America’s veterans.  You’ll be hearing much more about this incredible man, including TV coverage, in the upcoming weeks.  As usual there will also be lots of great music by artists like Govinda, In-Grid, Santana, Saint Germain, Meklit Hadero and Dela Dap.  Listen locally at 96.5 FM or steaming live right here at wslr.org

RADIO GUMBO

This week we’re taken it down to Louisiana for some “bayou blues” and we’ll be featuring one of Radio Gumbo’s favorites, Tab Benoit (pronounced Ben-Wa).  Learning his guitar skills in the blues joints of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, playing alongside blues legends like Tabby Thomas, Henry Gray and Raful Neal, Tab burst onto the blues scene in the early nineties with his own brand of swamp and funk blues. We’ll be playing some of his music with the group Louisiana LeRoux, and his work with artists like Jimmy Thackery, Debbie Davis and Kenny Neal, as well tracks from his numerous solo albums. Besides his musical skills, Tab, a native of Houma, LA., in 2003 formed an organization for promoting awareness of coastal wetlands preservation called the “Voice of the Wetlands”.  We’ll add in some music by other artists, mostly from the Louisiana and East Texas region, like Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buckwheat Zydeco to make you a “Louisiana hot sauce gumbo” this week.

This week on Hot Tea, host Bryan “BongoBry” Osgood pays tribute to two great musicians who recently left us, Johnny Otis and Etta James.  Johnny Otis, who died on Jan. 17th of this year, is widely credited with discovering Etta James, and he also co-wrote her first big hit, “Roll With Me Henry”.   Etta James, born Jamesetta Hawkins in 1938, recently passed away on January 20th.  Join us as we pay a special tribute to these great performers who’s work included many genres of music including R&B, Blues and Rock n’ Roll.

Joining the Collective in the studio will be criminal trial attorney Adam Tebrugge, and local advocate for womens’ and immigrants’ rights, Jeanette Ocasio.  We will be joined by phone by Florida State Senator Arthenia Joyner, author of S.B. 524 (The Restraint of Incarcerated Pregnant Women Act), and Rebecca Brodie, a legal advocate, author, and instructor of legal studies in Massachusetts, who planned to shackle herself in labor in December 2011 to protest shackling pregnant inmates during childbirth. Also calling in will be Janice Banther, founder and executive director of the Pinellas County based prison doula and childbirth education program, Birth Behind Bars.

Ayala is member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona. This past October, Ayala a classically trained guitarist and one of Indian country’s most successful recording artists, was honored as Artist of the Year at the 2011 Native American Music Awards at the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls, NY. Passion, Fire & Grace, Ayala’s 8th release of mostly-original classical guitar compositions, was the work to the NAMA advisory board that helped Ayala earn the title. Ayala, has been touring extensively in the United States, Canada and South America. Tune in and hear music from his new CD “Shades of Blue”

Melissa Greener joins host Dave Beaton on 2Days in 2Hours tomorrow at 3:30pm. Melissa Greener has trekked mountain ranges in the Alps, Slovakia and Tibet. She’s pedaled a bicycle across Canada and lived in a rural village in China. Her current adventure is a full time schedule of international touring, performing in theaters, festivals and house concerts alike. Melissa will perform live on the air in the WSLR studios.
