In celebration of the Feast of Absalom Jones, the first African-American ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church, the Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota, has invited the Rev. Canon Benjamin Twinamaani, rector at Tampa’s Grace Episcopal Church, to preach on Sun., Feb. 8, during the 7:30, 9 and 11 a.m. Masses. He will also preach Sat., Feb. 7, during the evening Mass at 5:30 p.m.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota and co-sponsor BDH Associatesl host, “Fire, Floods and Famine: What Can We Do About Climate Change”, a symposium of three experts on the subject of Climate Change and its anticipated effects on our way of life. Panelists include David Hastings, professor of Marine Science and Chemistry at Eckerd College, Eric Draper, Exec. Director of Audubon Florida, and Linda Marsa, speaker, journalist and author of “Fevered: Why a Hotter Planet will Hurt our Health and How We Can Save Ourselves.” The symposium, which includes dinner catered by Morton's Gourmet Market, costs $25, including wine and soft drinks. This man grew up near the headwaters of the Everglades on a 14 mile long dirt road. He worked his way to the top and eventually took 4th, 3rd and 2nd place at the International Blues Challenge. Among many other awards, he is the only two-time recipient of the Lyon/Pitchford Award for "Best Diddley-Bow Player". This man is a legend. Bring a chair and picnic to enjoy the music by a fire.
