I like to look at my program as being audience responsive. I chose the name - Our Kind of Folk - to reflect that. I love requests and want to play the kind of "folk" music that my listeners enjoy. I also try to stay on top of who is coming to the area and to let you know where they are performing. If I challenge you a bit now and then, I think that's ok, but I hope that I always produce a dependable program. Much of the music I play comes from my personal music library, so it may take me until the following week, or more, to meet a request if you call me during my show, but I will do my very best to track it down and get it on the air for you.
I look at "folk" music as a vibrant and rather eclectic genre, tied together by the common thread of being generally performed by singer/songwriters - folks that write their own music and perform it mostly acoustic instruments. During my program you are likely to hear music on the edge of being bluegrass, country, jazz, or blues - as well as the sounds that might more comfortably be considered folk. I try to play some of the classics from the '60's and earlier - Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and the like, but I also try to provide a platform for the newer talent of today - played by folks in their 20's and early 30's. In between, I find plenty of time to play musicians that began their careers during what I consider to be the "rebirth" of the "folk music" scene - the 80's. I work hard to help you discover musicians that you are likely not to hear on other stations or versions of songs that are not generally "available" or difficult to find. I believe in the power of lyrics and I love performances that are live and a bit less polished. In doing this show, I am continually amazed at the great number of talented musicians that exist under the radar of mainstream radio and who have no voice other than through Community Radio. These are Our Kind of Folk.
I really love this music and I hope that comes through in my program. Please join me on Monday mornings for 2 hours of our kind of folk music, give me a call while I'm in the studio and drop me an e-mail if you have a request, want more information about a show I announce, or have a question on an artist or tune that I play.. I'd love to hear from you.
Our Kind of Folk is broadcast Monday mornings, 7-9 am, on WSLR, 96.5, LPFM Community Radio, Sarasota, FL. The show is heard in the greater Sarasota area and is also available through our live-streaming link at www.wslr.org. Our Kind of Folk is programmed by Craig Huegel and seeks to play from a wide variety of singer/songwriter styles and artists. I am especially interested in providing a voice to those who are not often played elsewhere in the region. I am always interested in hearing new music that might fit my format. If you have something that you feel I might be interested in, please send it to the station with attention to me.
