He’ll be leading a discussion group and delivering a lecture entitled “Climate Change: Hell and High Water, Solutions and Choices” on Thursday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Auditorium, located at 1741 Main Street in Sarasota. This event is sponsored and organized by a Nation magazine group in Sarasota. For more information about the lecture and discussion group, I spoke with Mr. Fedder, who serves on the National Advancement Council of the Sierra Club as well as the Board of Visitors at the University of Maryland Law School and describes himself as the principal supporter of the Environmental Law Program at the University of Maryland Law School.

The Sarasota Film Festival, which begins on Friday, April 5, will feature fifteen shorts programs, including one entitled “SRQ Shorts,” which is comprised of short films that were made by Sarasota community members and filmed in and around Sarasota. One of these films, entitled “Boost,” deals with the issue of sexual assault on college campuses throughout the United States. For more information about “Boost,” I spoke with KT Curran, who wrote and directed the film and is also the Director of Source Productions, a live theater company created by Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida that produced “Boost.”

The organization invites supporters to join its members in traveling to Tallahassee to speak with legislators about protecting the ecosystem as well as Everglades-related legislation that is currently making its way through the Florida legislature. The Florida Association of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, also known as FAPPA, is the state public policy office representing Florida’s five Planned Parenthood affiliates. On Monday, April 8, the FAPPA will be organizing its annual Legislative Summit in Tallahassee, where representatives will discuss a number of bills that have been introduced into this year's legislative session that they believe may pose a threat to reproductive health care in Florida. For more information about the Legislative Summit and the bills that FAPPA is currently monitoring, I spoke with Kellie Dupree, Vice President of Public Policy and Communications at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida.

The Florida First Amendment Foundation, or FFAF, in Tallahassee is currently observing Sunshine Week, a national initiative that began on March 10 and ends on Saturday, March 16 to promote a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information in the United States. Florida’s Third Annual Sunshine Summit is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Seminole, FL and will feature a keynote speech by Florida author and political commentator Diane K. Roberts. For more information about Sunshine Week and the FFAF’s initiatives for the current legislative session, I spoke with FFAF President and Founder Barbara Peterson.

This event will feature tours, lectures, demonstrations and hands-on learning, films and more, including a lecture at 11 a.m. by C. Randall Daniels (also known by his creek name Sakim), carrier of traditions for the Apalachicola. Organizations from around Sarasota and Manatee will be participating. The Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunity, and Revived Economies of the Gulf States Act of 2011, also known as the RESTORE Act, was enacted as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010. It presents Floridians with the opportunity to use portions of the money obtained as penalties for the spill to restore portions of the state's lands and ecosystems that run along the Gulf of Mexico. Members of Audubon Florida will be attending and making recommendations at a hearing organized by the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Council to determine how these funds can be best spent on Wednesday at 6 pm at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, 100 8th Ave. in St. Petersburg. For more about the initiatives that Audubon Florida will recommend, I spoke with Julie Raithmell, the organization's Director of Wildlife Conservation.

The ceremony took place at 3pm on the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 15 and and was followed by panel discussions on the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 16. A number of students, alumni and faculty members offered their thoughts on O'Shea's plans for the school.

The non-profit Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary, located at 7101 Palmer Blvd in Sarasota, will be holding it’s annual fundraiser “Animal Extravaganza” this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24. The event will feature animal shows that begin at 1:30pm and 4:30pm, as well as a number of other attractions. This Thursday, Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, women and men across the globe will be gathering in various locations to dance and perform other acts of self-expression in order to speak out against the sexual violence that many women face daily. According to the movement's website, www.onebillionrising.org, the events have been planned to “shake the world into a new consciousness." One of these events will be taking place locally at the Prana Yoga and Healing Center, 3840 S. Osprey Ave, Sarasota, FL, between 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. For more information, I spoke with Stephanie Heidemann, whose organization Authentic Voicework is hosting the event.

On the morning of Friday, Feb. 8, a group of community members spoke to the Board of County Commissioners and asked them to support funding for Phase 3 of the Myrtle Street reconstruction, which would provide bike lanes and sidewalks on the segment of the narrow, high-speed road between Old Bradenton Road and US-301. On Thursday, Feb. 7, I spoke with President of Florida Walks and Bikes Mike Lasche, who has helped to organize the Myrtle Street advocates, who represent a number of neighborhood associations in the area, about how and why this has become an issue.

The Asolo Repertory Theatre will soon be presenting “Faces of Change,” a documentary theatre piece in connection with their upcoming production “Clybourne Park,” to the public free of charge. It will be shown at Cook Theatre at the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts at 5555 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, on the grounds of the Ringling Museum of Art, on Friday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. A subsequent showing will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. At the North Sarasota Library, 2801 Newtown Blvd, Sarasota. Those who have recently driven past what was once Sarasota High School and is now slated to be the Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA), at 1001 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, may have been surprised to see an enormous organic sculpture constructed completely out of bare, untreated Crape Myrtles woven together in a way that allows visitors to wander in an explore what lies inside. While the sculpture, which is entitled "Out in Front," was still under construction on Friday, Jan. 11, I had the opportunity to interview the sculptor, Patrick Dougherty, who was outside threading branches and leading a team of volunteers in the afternoon sun to produce his 239th work of art. The SMOA, which commissioned the sculpture, currently offers docent tours of its grounds from 1:30 - 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. It is also currently holding a competition, called "Sticks and Clicks," in which members of the public can compete for prizes of up to $1000, plus Dougherty's book, "Stickwork." Entries are due by Sunday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. and can be submitted at www.sarasotamuseumofart.org.

Reverend Peter Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, or UUA, will be flying down from Boston to speak at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Rd in Sarasota, on Sunday, Jan. 27. Morales, who is the first Latino president of the UUA, was elected on a platform of growth and multiculturalism and focuses a considerable amount of his time and energy on immigration reform and environmental justice. The sermon that he will be delivering on Sunday is called, "Breaking Down the Walls," and deals with current opportunities for great progress in regard to American religion. Speakers scheduled to attend include Bart Arrington, Manager of Mine Permitting at Mosaic Phosphate Mining Company, John Fellows, AEIS Project Manager at the Army Corps of Engineers, Percy Angelo, Retired Environmental Attorney and Member of the Lemon Bay Conservancy, and Jim Cooper, President of Lemon Bay Conservancy and member of Protect our Watershed. For more information about this event, I spoke with Corky Pezzati, Natural Resource Chair of the League of Women Voters in Sarasota County.
