MEDIA REFORM SERIES: “KILLING US SOFTLY”

Tuesday/February 21

7 PM

Join us for a viewing and discussion of Jean Kilbourne’s fourth film in her groundbreaking series Killing Us Softly.  Females with a body size of 0 or 00 only represent 5% of females – nevertheless, these same body types are unrealistically presented by modeling and fashion agencies as the ideal weight for everyone.  In her most recent documentary, Kilbourne demonstrates the prevalence of advertisements in our daily lives, and how the expectation for an impossibly-thin body (thanks to the help of photo-editing tools) as well as the contempt for “unconventional beauty” affects the self-esteem of both girls and women.  Jean Kilbourne has been a researcher of consumerism and public health since the late 1960s; she holds an Ed.D. from Boston University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Westfield State College in 2004.
