The Michael Ross Quartet will play the first set. Bassist Michael Ross and his quartet might signify the best kept secret in modern jazz. Emanating from the Tampa area, the band perpetuates a fresh and altogether radiant outlook, due to its often-forthright blend of swing, funk and psycho-rock induced licks. Michael Ross possesses one of the fattest acoustic bass sounds you’ll likely hear. Add to that, Ross and guitarist LaRue Nickelson’s memorable comps, boasting balanced segments of scathing solos and lyrically rich choruses. Guitarist LaRue Nickelson joins him alongside keyboardist Ron Reinhardt and drummer Walt Hubbard.
In the second set they will be joined by Fred Johnson. A dynamic jazz and world music vocalist, FRED JOHNSON has toured with B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Chick Corea, and Miles Davis, and has been compared to greats such as Jon Hendricks and Al Jarreau. He was the most prominent jazz artist in the Bay Area for years, before devoting more time to working for peace and conflict resolution internationally through his artistry.
The Bridge jazz series is a collaborative project with the Jazz Club of Sarasota and WSLR+Fogartyville Our goal is to provide an opportunity for local jazz artists to PLAY and reconnect with their audiences while we stay connected to our Jazz Club and WSLR+Fogartyville communities.
