Host: Crearte Latino is a well-established player in the local culture scene. They are moving to new digs, and Noah Vinsky lets us know about the why and how.

Noah Vinsky: In a strip mall near the corner of Northgate Boulevard and US 301 in North Sarasota, you can now find what CreArte Latino calls a cultural hub for the Hispanic community in Sarasota and Manatee counties. CreArte Latino Cultural Center was founded in 2012 as a nonprofit that hosts theater productions, book clubs, and workshops. CreArte says they want to forge a bilingual cultural exchange between Hispanics and the community.

Co-founder and production Assistant Director Carolina Franco spoke about the importance of CreArte to the community.

Carolina Franco: For our volunteers, this is the place they can give back to the community, without worrying about the language barrier. For the non-Spanish speaking community, they can come here, they can learn about our culture, about our roots, about our struggles, about our talents. For our kids, this is the place where they can be connected to their roots, to learn where their parents or their family come from, or where they came from. And for our artists, this is the place where they can perform in both languages. This is a place where we can all be creative, and we can do so many things together.

NV: Since its inception, the organization had been housed in the Airport Mall Plaza on 15th Street, right next to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Now, they are opening at a smaller location. The organization says the new location will allow for greater inclusivity and creative programming.

Two weeks ago, CreArte hosted a debut performance at their new center. Voces de Inmigración was a staged reading with interviews from local community members from various backgrounds.

CreArte will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new location on Monday, December 9th from 5-6 pm. That’s at 1913 Northgate Boulevard in Sarasota. Hors d’oeuvres, entertainment, and important announcements will be provided.  To RSVP, email info@creartelatino.org.
