If you don’t have a brick on our People’s Patio yet, now’s your chance! DONATE TO OUR COMMUNITY NEWS FUND
The mission of WSLR’s Community News Fund is to ensure that our community members have the information they need to make informed decisions about local issues and to access resources available to residents in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. WSLR will foster a collaborative environment – bringing journalists and communities together to produce equitable media coverage and encourage civic participation. There are three elements to the program based on a model founded by City Bureau, a Chicago-based journalism lab – a Civic Journalism Reporting Internship, a Documenters Program and free informational newsroom forums. These elements work together to broaden paths of entry into the journalism industry, increase transparency and accessibility at local public governance meetings and bring people into solutions-based dialogue. The ideal of citizen journalism is to build more engaged and robust communities by providing the accurate news and information they need while encouraging citizen participation in the system. Citizen journalists help their communities hear a plurality of independent voices and help members of those communities access the skills and tools needed to monitor, evaluate and contribute to political, economic, and social life. Citizen journalism allows a community not only to take control of—and responsibility for—the media coverage of citizens’ hometowns but also to learn about and get engaged with the issues and events that matter to them.
