The Grateful Dead
“Bill Graham Presents the San Francisco Scene in Toronto”
O’Keefe Centre, Toronto Ontario, Canada
August 4, 1967
Stereo SBD MR>R>DAT(3)
> CDR(unknown number of CD gens)

  1. New Potato Caboose
  2. Viola Lee Blues //

REVIEW: Spots of brilliance, but not consistent; Excellent New Potato
Some good moments of psychedelic jamming in Viola Lee Blues, but also sections where Jerry seems to get
stuck. This was back when New Potato Caboose was new, as this is one of the first performances. Of the two
songs here, New Potato is the better. Jerry is in the zone with Phil and Pigpen, and Bob turns in a nice vocal.
Viola Lee is a 3, New Potato a 5.

REVIEW: Dear Quibbling Commenter
Differentiating between the live versions of Viola Lee in 1967 and 1968 is very silly indeed. This is an awesome
version, awesomely recorded and every time I hear it my big toe shoots up in my boot. These Canadian tapes are
some of the most intense Grateful Dead recordings out there. Listen to them. Love them.

REVIEW: The Grateful Dead: Show #187
Nothing too interesting about this show except that it’s show 6 of an 8 night run at the O’Keefe Center (some
took place on the same date at different times). Lindy’s missing, but no big deal… We’re left with New Potato and
a 20 minute Viola>Feedback. First Feedback I believe I’ve seen on Archive. Well on our way to Space… Here we come.

SBD MR > ? > 2R > C > CD

seeded by Hanno Bunjes & Uli Teute

  1. Turn On Your Lovelight
  2. Alligator

This is a different version than the MR > R > D that commonly circulates.
The sound on this version is noticeably less flat. The MR > R > D was
probably subjected to some bad job of noise reduction, and has had
some banter before Alligator removed.

REVIEW: Early Greatness
A hometown show a few years before I was born.
A Pigpen extravaganza… The Lovelight is pure energy. The reviewer below says it was the first? Just Incredible.
Also be sure to check out the previous night’s performance:

REVIEW: Alligator
Love me some alligator, and this version is one of my favs! Been on a cd for years from my buddy. Thought I’d
never find the “show” it was from!

REVIEW: Thgis is good – Gotta hear Airplane from this show
The Dead songs here are very good and I agree with comments here, however if you are blessed enough to hear
the entire show with the Airplane, they were clearly the stellar, inspired 60’s groove machine, and shining
brilliantly that night. One of the best Airplane live shows I ever heard. SHNID 10356.

This new copy is a significant upgrade over that version.”

REVIEW: Wow
Yowza–this has some major league rarities, plus David Nelson on mandolin. Check it out.

REVIEW: David Nelson
I was at this show and that is David Nelson playing the mandolin; he was fantastic! It WAS an AWESOME
show, too. In later years, I really missed the accoustic shows of the early ’70s. I’m just glad that we always had
the ‘Jerry Band’ to hear in between Dead tours/shows.

REVIEW: Mystery Mandolin
It says in Dick’s notes that “Jerry plays mandolin real fine” but I think Jerry’s on his guitar the whole set. Either
way, some fine ol custic dead here.

REVIEW: beautiful
great recording, lots of rare gems, and a mandolin! who cares if it is Jerry or David Nelson – it sounds excellent.
Sound is a bit hissy, but it’s an acoustic show for cryin’ out loud – the sound isn’t going to be perfect. Enjoy a
gorgeous El Paso, a stunning Rosalie McFall, a rousing Cocaine blues, and a laid back Deep Elem!

REVIEW: This is a treasure!
A golden nugget from a brief but very special period! The sound on this file is far from perfect, but this is very
special nonetheless! Its tragic that no more of these exclusively acoustic shows exist.

REVIEW: A treasure
Despite the sound, this is a true treasure and a performance not to missed.
