REVIEW: Played on 8/13/79
this was to have been the 2nd of 3 nights at Red Rocks. But the rain began to fall during the 2nd set of
the first night and, unfortunately, continued for the next two nights. But, the change in the weather didn’t
dampen the spirits of all who had set this on their calendar months before and made the trek to see the
band on the ‘Rocks’ in the middle of the summer of ’79. All were grateful for the show still going on, as
Bobby’s comments indicated, and thankful to the crew that tore down the set at RR and re-assembled it
all in McNichols amidst the rain and a very short timeline. ‘And the band kept playin’ on.’ As mentioned,
great and rare, (for that time period), Shakedown open. Althea and Lost Sailor being slowly introduced
as new songs in back-to-back nights, (we know the songwriting faction of the band were not the most
prolific songwriting teams in the 80’s. But what they did put together held up fine through the years
after.) The Other One jams were becoming increasingly refreshing as Brent introduced new sounds to the
psychedelic passion of Other One-chaos. Finishing the show with Truckin’-Nobody’s Fault but My
Own-Truckin’ close with Sugar Mag for dessert was a sweet touch. You could tell the band was not
denying the faithful crowd an all-out show despite the wet conditions. And they were even willing to
move back to Red Rocks the next night, if the weather had improved – which it didn’t. But a great show
which made up for the disappointment and difficulties of not having all 3 nights in Red Rocks. Thanks
to the band, the crew and the good recording of a memorable night in the Rockies. 4-star rating plus a
big smile for all the positive energies and those who didn’t whine. – JesterJSNWMF

REVIEW: What a Shakedown!
And what a mix! The flame is burning hot on Shakedown. I have never heard Bobby be so funky, or as
craven said, “Th(is) Shakedown is as funky as James Brown’s G-string after he snorts an 8-ball and plays
a game of beach vollyball.” Check out Bobby 4:30-4:58, and throughout. If you listen from 8:00- 8:25 it
sounds as if there is another guitarist. And Phil! Phil stomps all over this one. The boys were on this
night as the first set keeps it up with Uncle>River, Candy, FOTD & Mindlewood getting a nod. Very
young versions (4th performance of each) of Althea and Sailor. Althea is more under construction with
different lyrics then what Garcia finally settled on. The second set is also a keeper. The opening trifecta
is zippy and pleasant enough but the jam begins with He’s Gone and it’s pure GD from there. And yes,
Bobby does screw up the lyrics to Truckin’, but the sun rose today as well.
REVIEW: Had to move from Red Rocks
Having to move inside because weather was too bad for Red Rocks, everyone was bummed ,boys step up
and picked everyone’s spirits up.Fun Days!
REVIEW: I agree but …!
Yeah dude, I was at all 3 of these R.R.’s (which I taped myself got busted in the 1st set and then the
bands roadies told the busting security to give me back my equipment and let me continue) + 2 McN.’s
and indeed the Shakedown here is cool with Phil on the old bass with the 10 button ala Europe ’72.

REVIEW: Dead 1979_08_13
Great show – Great recording! Check out the short, instrumental “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” in the
“Truckin'” exit jam
REVIEW: Mile High State
This is a great show all the way through. Excellent Shakedown opener with first set featuring a bevy of
classic tunes. Interesting to see Lost Sailor as a stand alone. Obviously, see that a lot with Saint, but I
can’t ever remember seeing it with LS. Of course that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Anywho, the second
set from He’s Gone forward is fantastic!! Do also love that Nobody’s Fault Jam at the end of Truckin.
Shades of ’73. Final verdict: Top Quality.
REVIEW: A shining moment!
I couldn’t have asked for a better setlist on this the date of my birth. I really love the Candyman and
Althea but Lost Sailor is truly one of my very favorite songs and it is really displayed well here, on this
the day of my birth.
REVIEW: Great Candyman
Check out the way Jerry kicks off his Candyman solo…it’s a good one. In fact, Althea and Lost Sailor are
excellent as well. Happy Birthday my friend.
REVIEW: A great show
How Great? Well, after collecting Dead tapes for 30+ years when I first started converting to digital not
long ago this was the first show I got b/c I had never been able to find a truly decent copy of it. I had had
the He’s Gone> Other One as decent filler for decades but never the whole show.
