LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Together, Fred Johnson, David Pate, and Michael Ross create a sound that’s deeply rooted in jazz tradition yet alive with modern spirit — a trio of seasoned artists whose chemistry and creativity turn every performance into a journey of rhythm, melody, and soul. For this performance, the trio will perform music from David and Michael’s new album, Conversations, lots of jazz standards and originals

Fred Johnson – Vocals A dynamic jazz and world music vocalist, Fred Johnson has toured the world with legends including Chick Corea, Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, and Richard Elliot. Frequently compared to masters like Jon Hendricks and Al Jarreau, Johnson’s voice and presence are at once soulful, virtuosic, and deeply human. Beyond music, he has devoted much of his life to peace and conflict resolution through art. “The world needs to hear Fred Johnson’s music.” — Chick Corea “To say this was a triumphant return would be a gross understatement… this performance was simply ‘as good as it gets.’” — Scott Hopkins, Music Fest News

David Pate – Saxophone A Clearwater native, David Pate’s sound is instantly recognizable — bold, inventive, and full of fire. He has performed with Sam Rivers, Bogus Pomp, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Liquid Bebop, among countless others. Twice named Best Instrumentalist in Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay awards, Pate is celebrated for his amazing chops, fearless improvisation, and original voice on the horn. His extraordinary technique is in service to blinding epiphanies of sound that soar to unexpected heights just as they plumb the darkest depths. His music demands attention, which it rewards thoroughly and generously.” – Bernie Freydburg, Creative Pinellas

Michael Ross – Bass Born in Harrisburg, PA, and educated at the University of South Florida, bassist and composer Michael Ross brings deep musical intelligence and groove to every performance. A longtime pillar of the Tampa Bay jazz scene, he has led three acclaimed groups — Liquid Bebop The Michael Ross Quartet, and Michael J. Ross &Company — releasing four albums of original compositions: Doghouse (2000), Dog Eat Dog (2002), Year of the Dog (2004), and Giraffe, (2023) As a sideman, he has performed with Nat Adderley, Jimmie Cobb, Herbie Mann, and Nathen Page.

“Michael Ross possesses one of the FATTEST acoustic bass sounds you’ll likely hear.” — All About Jazz “A bedrock melodist in much the same manner as Charlie Haden… his compositions are both thoughtful and swinging.” — Cadence
