Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA
March 29, 1968

All Transfers and Mastering By Charlie Miller

Warts and all…when they were rude, crude, electric, and VERY psychedelic!:

One Set:
1. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
2. Death Don’t Have No Mercy
3. Sitting On Top Of The World
4. Dark Star
5. Morning Dew
6. Turn On Your Lovelight >
7. That’s It For The Other One >
8. New Potato Caboose >
9. Born Cross Eyed//

REVIEW: this is an audience recording
Not that this sounds bad but I question the claim that it’s a soundboard. There’s significant hall
echo and you can hear conversations very clearly during song breaks. During one break you can
even hear a friend of the person making the recording advising them to keep the tape rolling –
“there’s nothing happening now but you can keep it going”. Something like that.

REVIEW: Incredible sound
This is a stellar ’68 show no question but what got me so involved was the beautiful sound. To
me, this wasn’t just ‘another’ beautiful Charlie Miller master. The sound has this sort of open feel
to it that makes you feel like you’re there… even if you weren’t born yet. This quality has it’s best
effect on the more ‘spacey’ tunes like Dark Star and NPC but it lends a mournful sound to Death
Don’t. Thanks for this gift.

REVIEW: Amazing
superb!! a moving “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” and getting to hear Jerry really explore “Dark
Star” is great. I have recently started listening to the dead’s recordings from the 60’s and this is
the best one I’ve heard so far.

REVIEW: Possibly 2 sets?
After Morning Dew an announcer comes on, tries to rally applause for the Dead, and then starts
to talk about the area’s fine dining options. Dead were headliners over 2 other acts, so maybe they
took a set break?

REVIEW: Greatest New Potato ever
Two From The Vault and Carousel 2/14/68 are masterpieces, no question about it. But Garcia’s
soloing on this version is one of the top guitar solos of all time, not just 1968. He gets a little
sloppy at one point but it’s a good sloppiness. You can tell he’s having fun. Howling! The rest of
the show is ok. I’ve heard better versions of Lovelight though I could swear that, during Bobby’s
vocal solo, I could hear Pigpen cursing his organ.

REVIEW: Another Outstanding Early 68 Show
This one’s a beauty! They bring Death Don’t Have No Mercy back into the set (and it is smokin’)
and play a vicious New Potato. What’s not to like? Great recording and mix.

Necessary notes from Mr. Miller::
— There is a lot of audience mixed in with this soundboard
— A lot of song intros are cut
— Born Cross Eyed cut at start and end
— The first 4 songs were previously mislabeled as being from 3/26/68
— Thanks to Rob Eaton for lending me his Dats
— Thanks To Joe B. Jones for his help with the pitch correction

In the second hour:
Grateful Dead
Ice Palace, Las Vegas, NV
March 29, 1969
SBD > Master Reel > Cassette > Dat
All Transfers and Mastering By Charlie Miller

One Set:
1. Morning Dew
2. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
3. Doin’ That Rag
4. Dark Star >
5. St. Stephen >
6. The Eleven >
7, Turn On Your Lovelight

From this recording:
REVIEW: Nice surprise here!
This is a fantastic Dark Star!! I have never listened to this show before and I’m glad I did. The
sound for 1969 is just ridiculously good. Thank you Mr. Miller.

REVIEW: 1969
This is an awesome show! Jerry’s vocals are perfect, and the band is on fire.

REVIEW: Nice show
Excellent Dark Star.

From other recordings:
REVIEW: Melted Ice!
This show was so smoking hot that it surely musta melted down the Ice House in Vegas 1969.
Interesting comment by Jerry at onset of Dark Star: “ we wrote this song this morning just for the
Ice House.” Sound is excellent. I’m assuming that this was a 3 or not band concert as the show is
only 1 hr 24 min. If you like early 69 you’ll like this show. 5 stars

REVIEW: my first show
I was only three when my parents took me to this show, but I do have a faint memory of having
lots of fun while enjoying the music and dancing. It all started here for me…..And 221 shows
later….

REVIEW: Excellent
Very strong Eleven and a beautiful Doin That Rag.

REVIEW: The Holy Trinity
Any show with the Holy Trinity (DS.>St. Stephen->The Eleven) is worth a listen, and that
includes this one. Sound quality is fine. Phil sounds great! Thank goodness they kept TC low in
the mix. Hard to imagine what seeing the Dead in Vegas was like back then when The Mob still
ran the town.
