“Yesterday’s Dead Today”, Monday, December 9th, 7-9pm Eastern

Written by on Monday, December 9, 2019

“It is said that, if you lined up all those who have ever been to a Grateful Dead concert head-to-toe, the line would stretch around the moon, and about halfway back. And nobody would complain!”

Grateful Dead
Fox Theatre, St.. Louis, MO
December 9, 1971
MSR>LATVALA C>DAT>CDR

The first show after the legendary run at Madison Square Garden’s Felt Forum(12/5 being one of my all-time
faves, so you could also call that run a rehearal for tonight’s broadcast! A superb recording of a very hot, tight
evening! And the only recording of this evening, to boot!Additionally, this concert does not appear in the
Trading Compendiu,

REVIEW: great quality
even if jerry flubs the first verse of brown eyed women, still a kick ass show…quality is great!! real good!!! { i
mean, all these shows have a bit o’ hiss} yucky wait…..on ramble on rose- distortion is here to party on the
piano!!!!!yeaaaaa

REVIEW: high fidelity
The instruments AND vocals sound particularly crisp and clean to me, unlike alot of shows from this era.
Energy level pretty high, but I’m a real sucker for this vintage. One of THE best Casey Jones, and OMSN played
as it should be…fast, rockin’, no DJG, and lots ‘o’ Phil. Honorable mention to It Hurts Me Too. It’s easy to
sometimes take these shows/songs for granted, but if you’re into this time period, don’t pass on this one. 5 stars,
to average things out a bit.

REVIEW: Why is next night better?
The next night’s show has many more downloads and reviews, but this show is very good, too. Some songs
sound even better on this recording – vocals louder on T.J. and Truckin’, for example.

REVIEW: What you wanna do…
What can you do about it… it’s 1971 and this is yet another stellar show!

REVIEW: Holy Cow
What a beauty…strong start to finish. Love the Banter, really makes ya feel like yer there. Great sound. Yet
another show on my list. Thankyou both Mr. Kaplan and Mr. Sacks…made my day you have.

REVIEW: Great time
Great show, great time. Keith is there; his piano is necessary, imho, for the new songs (Jack, Brown-Eyed,
Tennessee, Ramble). But it’s better than the preceding three months because Ron’s back. And it’s better than the
following months because, as skwimite noted below, Donna Jean isn’t yet there. That’s my story and I’m sticking
to it.

REVIEW: highlight
This is my favorite Black Peter ever. Tennessee is solid. That being said, this show is ultra-middling outside of
that. They were probably beat from the Felt Forum shows which explains a kind Peter, run and see

REVIEW: –
One of the hottest 2nd sets you’ll ever hear.
