I’ve seen thousands of reviews over the years, but this actually explains “A Deadhead”…
“REVIEW: stella
As a new fan of the Dead it was years before I realized the importance of the tears streaming down
the face of the girl beside me. She seemed to be having a religious experience. Now I know why”

The beginnings of the magical ‘77 year…
Seven versions in the archive and only two(not including this one) have reviews, These are
reviews of the Charlie Miller soundboard as supplied above. The first review says it all for me!
REVIEW: 6 star show
This show, and the night before, would make a great Dick’s Picks.
REVIEW: Very Nice
This is a strong show throughout. Sound is crisp. Every song has it moments so I won’t review
everyone. However, pay attenetion to Scarlet Begonia’s, it has a stronger than normal jam and
stands alone great. St. Stephen>Other One>Stella very good with unique jams throughout, and a
great transition from the spacy end of other one into stella. Two encores with a standard US
Blues followed by a typical Terrapin that has a moment or two of its own. Enjoyable show
typical for the time, but I really enjoyed the varying jams that struck me as different than most.
REVIEW: I Love These Shows!
Marching in Winterland! All three nights were solid. These shows sold me on the Dead and to
hear them again is a great pleasure.
REVIEW: 6 star show
This show, and the night before, would make a great Dick’s Picks.
REVIEW: As good as Winterland gets
These are very hot, timeless shows. Whole first set, second set, Scarlet (one of the last of the
stand alone style and I think my favorite stand alone on this whole site) is exceptional. Check out
the triumphant St Stephen>Other One a magical combo on an off night, however they were very
on this night…
Sound quality is peerless – This is the show that you give to people when they want to get it…
REVIEW: Other One ending
There is some absolutely beautiful soft and pretty guitar work by Jerry during the last 5 mins of
the Other One before it segues into Stella Blue. Be sure to lend an ear 😉 5* officially
REVIEW: thanks charlie!
once again, the intrepid charlie miller brings us another stellar upgrade – but of course this show
was golden to start with. for some reason i hadn’t heard it before today and, well, yeehaw!
minglewood, deal, cassidy, peggy-o, b.e. women all rock – then the nutzo scarlet set-stopper:
rippin’ first solo, and crazy-epic-climax ending jam! not to mention set 2…!
REVIEW: my personal favorite
A lot of focused, laid back energy throughout the show. Great sound. A beautiful gem. You won’t
be disappointed. A ’77 at Winterland!
REVIEW: great sounding sbd
bands in the zone (bobs lowest in mix). jerrys brings classic’s to the table
REVIEW: 03-20-1977
Beautiful sound. Charlie miller does a great job again. St. Stephens is superb. Slowed down a bit,
with crystyl clear audio
REVIEW: beautiful
The Stephen > Other One > Stella is desert island material. No one I’ve ever heard play can pull
of this kind of segue into Stella like Jerry. Absolute beauty in guitar…The guitar runs in Stella are
pristine. Funny how ’77 has so many moments like this. Jerry just clean and melodic and playing
soul music
REVIEW: an old ice skating rink
I’m not a huge fan of 77 — not by a long shot. But this recording has a real nice vibe to it and the
song selection and sequencing is darn near perfect. Keith is a key factor here.
REVIEW: Crazy night
you can NOT miss this stand-alone “Scarlet”, “Row Jimmy”, Stephen->Other One. Essentials.
All are rousing, guitar fireworks, long jamming, so heady. Also excellent from tonight are
estimated prophet, stella blue, and brown eyed women.
What is the “Mouth of the Beast”?
“If you have ever listened to live recordings you will probably have noticed that not all recordings have the same
quality. It all depends on the gear used, the location of the mics and of course the band’s groove. Back behind the
soundboard, the taper section was not the ideal location for recording. And those crisp soundboard tapes, they
leave out the full experience of the show. The missing sound is the dynamics of being up close to the stage while
the band performed. Up front, dead center in the first fifteen rows is where “the sound” was ideal. The tapers
knew this was the spot. They braved security and the bands’ roadies to make these tapes. This project has been
started to preserve, archive and distribute these rare recordings. This project is for the fans — who want to
experience recordings made in the “Mouth of the Beast”. We refer to this project as MOTB.”
