Job Summary
As a WSLR News Journalism Intern, you will play a key role in assisting the News Director with all aspects of news gathering and producing weekday newscasts for Sarasota’s community radio station. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to learn sound gathering techniques, the editorial process involved in packaging stories and interviews, and basic audio editing using digital production tools.
You will gain valuable experience by writing and producing stories, researching potential news topics, and arranging and conducting interviews. Additionally, you may assist with news distribution through the station’s website and social media platforms.
This position is 8 hours per week at $12/hour and is designed for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. WSLR+Fogartyville will work with school administrators to ensure college credit is awarded where applicable.
Responsibilities
- Assist in gathering and producing content for WSLR’s weekday newscasts.
- Research potential stories and identify underrepresented perspectives and community groups.
- Book and conduct interviews (in-person and phone) and assist with script writing.
- Use digital audio editing tools to edit news packages and select soundbites.
- Transcribe interviews using AI tools, editing for clarity and accuracy.
- Participate in listening/critique sessions to refine storytelling skills.
- Attend news meetings and collaborate with the News Director to meet editorial goals.
- Support news distribution through the station’s website and social media platforms.
Preferred Experience
- Strong interest in public radio journalism, news, and current events.
- Excellent writing, research, communication, and organizational skills.
- Punctual, professional, and familiar with basic computer applications.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Some knowledge of audio editing software (e.g., Audacity or similar) preferred.
- Basic knowledge of using a microphone, recorder, and headphones (or willingness to learn).
- Experience in reporting, editing, or producing (e.g., school or community radio, student paper) is a plus.
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent research skills, including the ability to identify nontraditional experts and diverse community voices.
- Ability to conduct interviews and write scripts for broadcast.
- Knowledge or willingness to learn digital audio editing software.
- Strong attention to detail for transcription, editing, and story packaging.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with the News Director and team members.
Compensation
$12/hour for 8 hours per week. WSLR+Fogartyville will work with school administrators to ensure college credit is awarded where applicable.
