“Yesterday’s Dead Today”, Monday, January 15th, 7-9pm Eastern

Written by on Monday, January 15, 2018

“There Is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert!”

In light of today being the birthday of Martin Luthor King, combined with all the repression, regression,
upward wealth distribution, and outright racism in the United States today, I am bypassing my usual
opaening theme to feathre the following:

“Flowers In The Night”, Music & Lyrics: Jack Traylor:
“Paine and Pierce and Robespierre, Juarez and Danton,
Luther, King and Lumumba dead but far from gone
Lenin, Cleaver, Jesus too, outlaws in their nations,
Revolutionaries all, dreamed of liberation

God is up in heaven his agents here on earth
The church has said that this man rules, he’s best because of birth.
But what’s that noise down in the street, who dares to shout and sing?
With all his courtiers at his side, who dares to touch the king?”

Old man get some soldiers, keep them close at hand
There’s a fire in the country, there’s a flame come to the land
Seven thousand loyal troops, in ranks they stretch so far
With seven thousand well armed men, no one can touch the czar.

Louis watch the prisons, send the goons around
Is that Paris burning, is the Bastille falling down?
And where are all the mercenaries – paid for by the king?
Have they joined the mob you say, doesn’t money mean anything?

Old men get some soldiers, keep them close at hand,
The seeds that were sown yesterday now flower in the land
And guard yourself most carefully with military might.
For plants that cannot bloom by day must flower in the night.

From the Kantner/Slick/Freiberg album “The Ballad Of Baron Von Tollboth and The Chrome Nun”.

From this matrix recording:
REVIEW: Sounds Great, best source
Thanks for this under-documented show from an under-documented month. Matrix really brings it alive.
Phil banter is hilarious. Always loved the New Haven show, this one could be my favorite of
Keith-Donna 1979 (only two months). Ditto on the Miracle>Shakedown. Early Miracle jams are the
best, this is an epic one. Terrapin is quality and powerful as well. Great showcase of the Shakedown
Street material. Though Keith is obviously not in his most interactive moment, Phil Bob Jerry Bill and
Mickey channel new progressions in old and maturing standards.

REVIEW: open mindedness
I rarely venture beyond 77 although I attended shows ,many of them excellent, up until 84 or so.The pair
of jacks at the top reminded me of this one, pretty good stuff and I do remember this as a great time I got
to expand my horizons more often!

REVIEW: Some hidden gems
While overall this show is not the GD at the top of their game, for me, three gems stand out – Jack Straw,
Row Jimmy, and Shakedown. My top three versions of those songs. There’s something about the second
solo in that Jack Straw. Also, love this matrix mix, still have the tape from my trading days 25 years ago!

REVIEW: Wow.
This show is insane.

REVIEW: Best Copy of a Favorite Show
For some reason, this show holds a special place in my heart. The soulfulness of Jerry shines through,
warts and all. This is my favorite Jack Straw, it’s a ragged-glory masterpiece. The Row Jimmy is also
one of my favorites, the Matrix mix really lends a certain quality to the tune. And of course the electric
Miracle>Shakedown. It’s like the band was reluctantly celebrating the end of the Keith/Donna era, and I
like it!

REVIEW: Classic Miracle > Shakedown
Back when I had 4 cases full of GD casettes, this 2nd set was in my rotation of about 20 tapes that got
steady play. However, I only ever played the Miracle->Shakedown. This is a 5 star section for sure… the
rest is fairly average. Question: My copy has a 2 minute section before the ‘Where’s Phil?’ part where
somebody is announcing to an angry crowd that “Jerry is sick” and they “can’t play tonight” and are
“looking into rescheduling”. Does anyone know what date that is from? Is the 1/15 show a makeup for
an earlier cancelled show?
