There will be up to nineteen questions on the ballot in Sarasota County in this election. Twelve of the questions are about revisions to the Florida state constitution and the rest concern local Sarasota County matters, including a Sarasota city question and a North Port charter question. Obviously you’ll want to avoid the long lines caused by people trying to figure this out in the voting booth, so it’s best to vote by mail or during early voting October 22 through November 3. Getting a Vote by Mail ballot sent to you is easy. You can request one online. Also, a sample ballot tailored to your location can be seen today by entering your address here. There’s a sample there in Spanish also.
This Wednesday, October 3, at 9am, New College professor Dr. Frank Alcott will explain each of the twelve Florida ballot questions. That’ll take about 40 minutes. Then Kindra Muntz will talk about the value of changing the election of county commissioners to “single-member districts,” and Pat Rounds will make a case for not doubling the number of signed petitions necessary for citizens to place a charter amendment on the ballot. They’ll also discuss the troubling aspects of “Change the Date,” that is, moving Sarasota city elections to coincide with the fall general elections.

The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition supports amendment number four which would restore voting privileges to over one and a half million Floridians! It was mentioned in the news recently. Progressive Sarasota recommends yes only on 3 (gambling), 4 (rights restoration), 9 (vaping, drilling),11 (property rights, criminal statues) and 13 (dog racing).
As for the local Sarasota County questions, Progressive Sarasota currently recommends yes on Legacy Trail extension, no on raising needed signatures to 10%, yes on not selling county parks/beach right-of-ways, yes on single-member districts, and no on ‘move the date’.
