“Yesterday’s Dead Today”, Monday, Nov. 21st, 7-9pm

Written by on Sunday, November 20, 2016

“There Is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert!”

Neither recording seems to reside in the Internet Archive:

Log Cabin Boys, American Legion Log Cabin,San Anselmo, CA
November 23, 1986
Sony ECM-939T > Cassette Master (Sony D6/TDK MA-R90)
Recorded by Steve Marcus
All transfers and mastering By Charlie Miller
Thanks to Sandy Rothman for finding Steve’s masters.
There was a bad mic cable that caused some problems.

This was The Grateful Dead’s Thanksgiving dinner party.

Sounds like just four friends sitting around a room and jammin’…tryin’ to figger out many bluegrass chords and lyrics and “…who sung it…” and even “if I know it…”.

And lots of tuning and banter, which means I won’t know how much of the New Riders I will be able to get in towards the end until I get there, depending upon how much tuning and banter I can skip…

There is no bassman, and I boosted the bass a tad to eliminate some of the hollowness:

Disc 1 – Set 1:
1. Freight Train Boogie
2. Rosalie McFall
3. Glass Of Wine
4. Drifting Too Far From Shore
5. Devil In Disguise
6. Two Little Boys
7. Cold Jordan
8. I’ll Follow My Darling

Set 2:
9. Drink Up And Go Home
10. Mystery Train/Six White Horses
11. In God’s Grace Forever More
12. Diamond Joe
13. A Little At A Time

Disc 2 – Set 2 cont’d.:
1. Swing Low Sweet Chariot
2. I’ll Go Drifting With The Tide
3. Snow White Wings
4. On Top Of Crucifix Mountain
5. I Hear A Voice Calling
6. A Broken Heart >
7. Please Come Home

Jerry Garcia – banjo, vocals
David Nelson – guitar, vocals
Sandy Rothman – mandolin, banjo, guitar, vocals
Dan Healy – guitar, vocals – does not play on last 4 or 5 songs

And, as time allows due to the various tunings, banters and discussions in the broadcast above.

The uploader claims that this date is actually 11/20/71:
“***Note: This has been date corrected. tracks and FFP will still show the 1970 date.***”(…the instructions that came with this download…)

New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Palestra,, Rochester, N.Y.
November 20, 1970
FM (knet)>?>cdrs>eac>flac
Thanks to Jason Graham for the source disc

Myself, I seriously doubt that this is any date other than 11/20/70 The Palestra. This date is documented in the New Riders concert database, and on 11/20/71 they were at the Pauley Pavilion at UCLA. And I also know for a fact that Buddy Cage’s first appearance with The Riders was 11/11/71, Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. And as well, Mickey left both groups in February, ‘71, and returned to The Dead in October ‘74.

1. DJ, Rock Scully, Sam Cutler intros

4. Truck Drivin’ Man
