Preserving Local News, then Rivera Sun – Weds. Oct. 16 at 9am on Peace & Justice

Written by on Sunday, October 13, 2019

This Wednesday, October 16 at 9am we’ll talk to Billy Cox, a reporter for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and a union member. We’ll talk about how our daily newspapers are under siege by their corporate owners which continue to lay off or not replace news gatherers across the country.

A proposed merger between Sarasota Herald-Tribune owner GateHouse Media and Gannett Corporation would cut an additional $300 million from operations nationwide. GateHouse owns 144 daily newspapers, 684 community publications, and over 569 local-market websites in 38 states. Gannett publishes USA Today and nineteen other papers.

Check out NewsGuild-CWA, a labor union that represents workers at some of GateHouse’s newspapers.

Billy also writes an interesting weblog De Void about UFOs!

On the second half of the show, Bob will talk to Rivera Sun.

“Rivera Sun is a change-maker, a cultural creative, a protest novelist, and an advocate for nonviolence and social justice. She is the author of The Dandelion Insurrection, The Way Between and other novels. Her study guide to making change with nonviolent action is used by activist groups across the country. Her essays and writings are syndicated by Peace Voice, and have appeared in journals nationwide.”

Her next appearance will be in Gainesville October 23.
