New College profs discuss election on Peace & Justice Weds., Oct. 28 at 9am.

Written by on Monday, October 26, 2020

This Wednesday, October 28 from 9-10am we’ll discuss the upcoming elections. But first we’ll have a brief report from Sarasota Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner about the voter turnout so far and the arrangements for safe voting.

Then we’ll have two New College professors who will give their views on the current political situation. Dr. Frank Alcock is an Associate Professor of Political Science at New College where he has taught courses on world politics, international law, and environmental policy since 2003. Dr. Brendan Goff is an Assistant Professor of History at New College where he teaches courses in U.S. history and the role of the U.S. in the world.

We’ll talk about possible post-election scenarios, the details of the twelfth amendment, the senate races, conspiracy theorists, Florida ballot Amendments, and much more.

Ron Turner appeals to voters who have requested a vote-by-mail ballot for the election: “Please vote and return your ballot as soon as possible to ensure that it reaches the elections office in time to be counted – by 7 p.m. election night.” He notes that if returning a ballot by mail, the U.S. Postal Service recommends mailing no later than Tuesday, October 27 to allow time for the ballot to reach the elections office by Election Day.

Also, Sarasota County voters may return vote-by-mail ballots to drop boxes inside any early voting site during early voting dates and times (October 19 – November 1; 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. daily). Voters also may take advantage of the popular, no-contact, vote-by-mail drive-thru, drop-off sites located outside all three county elections offices (Sarasota, Venice or North Port), weather permitting, Monday, October 19 – Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day), 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. daily.
