On Monday morning, the Sarasota legislative delegation will hear local petitioners. On Tuesday, Sarasota County Commissioner Mark Smith wants to bring back in-person neighborhood workshops. On Wednesday, the Bradenton City Council will discuss conveying city land to a mixed-use developer, and the City of Sarasota Development Review Committee will discuss two luxury condo tower projects in downtown.

 

Monday (12/16)

2024 Sarasota County Legislative Delegation meeting (no agenda)

Highlights: The state delegation – consisting of Sen. Joe Gruters, and Reps. Fiona McFarland, James Buchanan, and Danny Nix –  is responsible for developing the county’s legislative program which includes all local bills, community appropriation requests and county and municipal legislative priorities; and serving as a liaison between the Florida Legislature and local governments and community organizations. County legislative delegation meetings are an opportunity for legislators to hear from their home constituents about pressing issues, appropriations requests, and general business they want to see addressed in Tallahassee during the upcoming legislative session.

Highlights: Plans for an 18-floor luxury condo on the North Trail across from the Quay (going seven floors higher than zoning allows, using attainable housing density bonus); the developer of the Mira Mar luxury twin towers on S. Palm Ave. in downtown wants upzone to be able to go up to 18 floors (his argument: Needed to fund the restoration of the historic Mira Mar Apartments); a church is asking for a rezone of their land on N. Beneva and 17th, to build a 36-unit complex with market-rate rentals.
