Choose Democracy! then Justice Matters on Peace & Justice Wednesday, August 17 at 9am.

Written by on Tuesday, August 16, 2022

This week we’ll first talk to Dale Anderson. Dale has started a new movement and webpage called Choose Democracy. Its purpose is “to provide an organizing platform for citizens to become Democracy Activists and work to preserve, protect and strengthen our democracy.” We’ll talk about why he thinks democracy is in danger and what he’s proposing to do about it.

In the second half hour, since it’s the third Wednesday of the month, we’ll host Justice Matters, presented by Legal Aid of Manasota. Their guests will be the Hon. Kevin Bruning, Twelfth Judicial Circuit Court Judge; Neil Lyons, attorney with Luhrsen Goldberg and incoming president of the Sarasota Bar; and Nicole Price, attorney with Icard Merrill. The episode will be about the power of pro bono and how an attorney or law firm can make a difference in our community. People are entitled to an attorney in certain criminal cases, but this right does not extend in civil matters, where someone can lose their housing, benefits or job. The only people who can represent someone in court are attorneys, so pro bono work is vital to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable people in our community.
