The man in the picture is Roshi Philip Kapleau who was my first Zen teacher in Rochester, NY from 1968-1973. He is also the teacher of Roshi Lawson Sachter and Roshi Sunya Kjolhede who are co-abbots of the Windhorse Zen Center near Asheville, NC.. Lawson is my current teacher and is also the teacher for the Clear Water Zen Center in Clearwater, FL. Philip Kapleau wrote one of the most important books on Zen (The Three Pillars of Zen) which made zen practice more understandable to Westerners. He founded the Rochester Zen Center in 1966 and it still goes strong today with Roshi Bodhin Kjolhjede as the teacher.
