Among the thorniest problems facing the country and society is a lack of affordable housing. Here in Sarasota a large percentage of the population currently spend close to half their wages on a place to stay. That is unsustainable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that those folks are usually a lost paycheck or minor emergency away from being homeless. The Florida Housing Coalition (FHC) is commonly acknowledged as the foremost authority in Florida on housing that is affordable, homelessness, community development and related issues, as a clearinghouse for information, a provider of training and technical assistance, and an advocate at the state and national levels for people in need of housing that is affordable.
