Our nuclear posture, then beach ownership on the Peace & Justice Report, Weds. Feb 16 at 9am.

Written by on Sunday, February 13, 2022

This Wednesday at 9am the Peace & Justice Report will interview Ken Mayers of Veterans For Peace. We’ll talk about their recent Nuclear Posture Review. It reviews the nuclear posture of all the nuclear-armed states – the U.S., Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel, and it makes a number of recommendations for how the U.S. could provide leadership to begin a process of worldwide disarmament.

At 9:30 we’ll hear our regular ‘third Wednesday’ segment Justice Matters from Legal Aid of Manasota with Public Defender Larry Eger and Legal Aid CEO Linda Harradine. They will be joined by Gabriele Plendl, Assistant Public Defender for the 12th Judicial Circuit in Manatee County, and Isaac Eger, a journalist whose work has appeared in multiple local and national publications.

This week’s topic is the privatization of Florida’s beaches. Isaac and Gabriele will discuss the complex legalities of where the public beach ends and where private ownership begins. Conflict over this issue has intensified in recent years, with beachgoers arrested for trespassing and private homeowners erecting warning signs and hiring private security officers to monitor the sand. Isaac wrote the 2020 investigative article Who Owns Florida’s Beaches?
